The Federal University of Fronteira Sul (UFFS) is a public and popular higher education institution, created by Law No. 12.029, of September 15, 2009. UFFS is a social achievement of civil society which, for more than 20 years, fought for public higher education in this region. Aware of people´s demands, the university seeks to contribute to promote sustainable regional development and social justice, by integrating teaching, research and community engagement .

As far as international cooperation is concerned, UFFS seeks to cultivate peace, solidarity and cooperation among universities, nations, peoples and cultures through the exchange of knowledge, openness to cultural diversity and the provision of international experiences to the academic community. With this purpose, the internationalization policy defines two action focuses (not mutually excludent):

1. Southern Border and Latin America - this focus is centered on strengthening cooperation, solidarity and cultural rapprochement with Latin American countries, particularly with our Argentinian neighbors, seeking to build a Latin American perspective of reality analysis, in order to provide effective solutions for regional problems. In this regard, the collaboration with the Mercosur countries seeks to create a network of sustainable, innovative and low-cost initiatives that contribute to promote welfare and social justice in the countries concerned, involving local people and taking into account their cultures.

2. Science and technologies in the priority areas - this focus includes cooperation projects that seek to expand and share knowledge and practices in the social themes that were defined as priorities in the constitution of UFFS and were confirmed by the academic and the regional comunity in the Teaching, Research and Extension Conferences: environment and sustainability, family farming and agroecology, rural development, sanitation and urbanization, cooperative and solidarity based economy, interculturality and human rights, public policy, basic education and teacher training, popular education, rural education and collective health.
