Application / Selection procedures
The admission of new students to the Master’s Degree is given annually, through a Selection Process that consists of three different and eliminatory stages, in the following order: (i) foreign language proficiency exam, (ii) written test on specific knowledge related to the PPGEL’s research lines and (iii) the Pre-Project and curriculum vitae arguments.
In the first stage of the selective process, it is allowed to use a printed dictionary to perform the proficiency exam, and the exchange of material between the candidates is not allowed. The proficiency exam consists of objective and discursive questions and has as its object of assessment the level of comprehension and textual interpretation in a foreign language. The result of the proficiency exam is expressed by the concepts “passed” or “failed”, considering only approved candidates who obtain a grade equal to or higher than seven point zero (7.0).
In the second stage of the Selective Process, the written test on specific knowledge is composed of discursive questions, elaborated from the indicated bibliography of the concentration area and from the research lines of PPGEL. Only candidates who pass the foreign language proficiency exam take the written test on specific knowledge. The objects of evaluation of the written test are: mastery of the contents of the indicated bibliography, ability of written exposition, level of argumentation and ability to reflect on language. The written test is assigned a score from zero (0) to ten (10). Successful candidates at this stage of the Selective Process are those who obtain a grade equal to or higher than seven point zero (7.0).
For the third and last stage of the selection process, the pre-project and Curriculum Vitae arguments, there is an Examining Board composed of teachers from PPGEL, members of the research line to which the applicant competes. Only successful candidates in the previous two steps may participate in the pre-project and Curriculum Vitae arguments. The following are the objects of evaluation of this selection stage: the applicant’s oral presentation skills on his/her pre-research project, highlighting his relationship with his professional experience and intellectual production; clarity in the exposure of the parts that make up the pre-project; adherence and relevance of the pre-project to the research line in which the applicant applied; relevance of the pre-project bibliography as to the object, justification and problematization. Each applicant has up to 10 minutes for oral exposure. The Examining Board, in turn, has up to 15 minutes to argue the applicant. The pre-project and Curriculum vitae arguments are audio recorded and cannot be assisted by the other applicants. In assessing the pre-project argument and the Curriculum Vitae, is attributed by the Examining Board only the concept “passed” or “failed”.
The results of each of the stages of the Selective Process are published on the UFFS website (www.uffs.edu.br> Graduate> Stricto Sensu> Master in Linguistic Studies), containing exclusively the list of classified applicants. For the final classification of those approved in all stages of the Selective Process, the grade obtained in the written test of specific knowledge is considered. In the event of a tie in the written test of specific knowledge, for the purpose of classification, the tie-breaking criterion is age, with preference given to the older applicant, as provided in the sole paragraph of art. 27 of Federal Law 10.741/03. At the end of the Selective Process, the list of candidates classified with the indication of the advisors and their lines of research is disclosed.
The announcement of the selection process is available on the UFFS website (www.uffs.edu.br/PPGEL).
Access to the PPGEL is open to candidates who have completed an undergraduate degree recognized by MEC, at home and/or abroad, or conditionally, to applicants who prove, by means of a certificate or statement from a Higher Education Institution, that they have completed or are about to complete the graduation course. Each selective process is offered 24 places in the Master’s Degree Course in Linguistic Studies.
